The Royal Belgian Marine Society aims to encourage and support the implementation of scientific maritime research.
For this reason, the Society is active in several areas, such as:
- carrying out and publishing studies
- organizing conferences and study days
- helping students and young researchers.
It aims for a national presence by stimulating an interest in sea related scientific issues.
History
The Marine Society was founded in Antwerp on 6 July 1935.
In 1985, at the time of its fiftieth anniversary, H.M. King Baudouin granted the Society the privilege of becoming a “royal” Society.
In 1994, H.M. King Albert II and in 2014 H.M. King Philip agreed to continue the high patronage of the Society.
Membership
The Marine Society includes active members, associated members and foreign members. The conditions for membership are linked to scientific criteria.

Achievements
By means of its activities, class meetings, public conferences, communication publications, the Society brings maritime studies and research into the public domain and thus encourages interest in maritime affairs.
Activities
The results of studies and research, especially Communications, are published regularly in the Royal Marine Society’s publications.
